Acer's Predator 21 X puts a curved screen and dual GTX 1080s in a laptop

Acer’s new Predator 21 X is a monster. Not only have this machine’s designers put a curved 21-inch display on a laptop for the first time ever, they’ve also gone and given ittwo GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs as well. Add in five cooling fans, a 7th-generation Intel Core K-series processor, and space for as much as four terabytes of SSD storage, and you have a laptop that’s beyond obscene. Unveiling the 21 X at IFA in Berlin today, Acer acknowledges that this laptop is more of a proof of engineering acumen than any sort of "big seller" retail product. Each Predator 21 X will be made to order, starting in January of next year (which is how Acer can advertise today that it will have an Intel CPU that technically hasn't yet been announced). Among its other cool features and specs, there's also room for four DD4 slots that top out at 64GB of RAM, Tobii eye-tracking, a mechanical keyboard, a 4.2 sound system, a window to show off one of the big fans, and a numpad that flips over to...

'Resident Evil' Trailer: 'The Final Chapter' For The Most Successful Video Game Movie Series

We’ve talked a lot about video game movies and how Hollywood has mostly failed for the last twenty-three years to make a viable top-tier franchise from a video game property. But there is one quasi-exception. Sony’s Resident Evil franchise isn’t just the exception to the rule in terms of video game movies, it is something of an anomaly in any number of ways. First of all, it’s a (now) six-film series in an era when many would-be franchises top out at two or three. And it’s actually ending on its own terms, which, reboot or no, is almost heartwarming in this day-and-age. It’s also the only live-action video game-based film property to get more than one live-action theatrical sequel. With Paul W.S. Anderson directing four out of the six installments and writing all six of them, this franchise has a stamp of authorship that is becoming all the rarer in our brand-driven franchise world. And did I mention that it’s an R-rated series that has thrived in a distinctly PG-13 environment? Oh, a...

The first gameplay trailer for Quake Champions has arrived

Following the massive success of Doom 2016, it seemed inevitable that id Software would follow up with a reboot of its other famous first-person shooter franchise, Quake. Its existence was confirmed at E3 when the studio revealed a CGI trailer for Quake Champions, and now the first gameplay trailer has been released as part of QuakeCon’s opening ceremony. The upcoming “competitive multiplayer arena shooter” looks very much like a modern imagining of 1999’s Quake III: Arena. The 75-second video shows that development on the game is moving along at a fast pace, and, as you would expect, there's an emphasis on high-speed action. As the trailer’s Sauron-like voice announces “I see you,” we get to see some of Quake Champions’ weapons, including shotguns, assault rifles, rail guns, lasers, and rocket launchers – and yes, rocket jumps are possible. The verticle space appears to play a big role in the game; a lot of the footage shows player flying through the air using launch pads or the a...

One Person Made A Video Game To Rival ‘Final Fantasy XV’ And ‘Devil May Cry’ By Himself

A big deal is made about video game companies employing dozens, if not hundreds of people to make AAA titles. However, one person made an indie video game that had the visuals of “Final Fantasy XV” and the combat style of “Devil May Cry,” and he did it all by himself. Yang Bing, an indie video game developer living in South Korea, released a trailer of his title called “Lost Soul Aside,” and the world watched in awe as the work of one person held its own against games that were made by entire teams of professionals from giant brands. Twinfinite described the game as having impressive visuals and fast-paced combat that is reminiscent of titles like “Ninja Gaiden.” Supposedly, Bing was inspired to create his game by “Final Fantasy XV” of all things. The first trailer for the latest installment of the legendary franchise of Square Enix came out two years ago, which is about the same time that Bing started working on his game. After releasing the trailer, Bing enjoyed an outpouring of prai...

The Trailer for This Space Game Is Like a Cold War Mystery Film

Gravity was released in 2013 and attempted to represent what it would be like to be stranded on a space station. Since then, there've been a couple games that have tried to capture a similar, suspenseful effect. Outreach, a new game from developer Pixel Spill, is aiming for that general feel, as well--but with a very different narrative approach.    Pixel Spill announced the game today with a few details and a live-action trailer, which you can view below. The trailer helps establish the basis for the game's story, as it shows American intelligence agents uncovering a grand Soviet cover-up of a covert military space project. The trailer is also very well done, and gives a nice idea of the tone we can expect from the game. Outreach is set in the 1980s, and you take control of a Soviet cosmonaut tasked with uncovering what happened on board a military space station. You're alone on the station, searching for hints as to the fate of its crew. This is the project hinted at in t...

Overwatch Summer Games trailer hides a mysterious secret

Blizzard released a surprise update to Overwatch yesterday featuring a new soccer-styled game mode called Lúcioball and a big mess of Olympic-themed goodies. But there was something else in there too, hidden away from casual viewers: A string of text that the Best Minds of the Overwatch subreddit think is a salted and hashed password that may—just may—be a new Sombra tease. The thread is fascinating both for the amount of effort being put into unlocking the secret, and also the Very Serious Discussion about encryption and security, which includes a handy explanation of what 'salting' actually means.   “They don't store your password in plain text. They put it through an algorithm to make it all garbled,” a user named Undeadfish wrote, referring to the process of hashing a password, or encrypting it. “Now, the problem with just doing that is that two people might have the same password and the algorithm would garble them to be the same output. Instead, they started adding ...
